The fiberglass business grew out of the bottle business. Even bottle caps played their part. Covers for the first fiberglass air filters were made from perforated metal sheets left over from bottle cap manufacture. Owens-Illinois's first fiberglass products were air filters. Originally, the filters were made from coarse "broom straw" fibers.
