A well-known designer for Orrefors, Gunnar Cyrén tried to update some of the company’s classic modern designs with bold, graphic bowls such as this one. Some established luxury glass companies looked at the emerging Studio Glass movement with interest, but they failed to see that they would eventually compete with studio glass artists for the luxury glass market.

Bowl with Leaves. Transparent yellow, pink, blue, and gray lead (?) glasses; blown, "Graal" technique. Large hemispherical shape with straight rim and rounded bottom; encased transparent decoration of stylized leaves and stems in pink, blue, and gray glass swirling around the body, starting from a spiral in the base; solid bands at the rim; polished flat bottom, inscribed (abraded script) "Orrefors Graal B1169-78 Gunnar Cyrén".
