Baluster shape, with slightly flared rim; flat base with polished pontil mark; lower part of body and base with diamond molding (20 diamonds in a horizontal row); upper part with engraved water plants and flowers, a band of Renaissance-revival motifs of griffins, cherubs, vases of fruit, scrolls, etc.; neck with oval reserves containing fruit and flowers, and inscribed "THIS / JUG WAS PURCHASED / AT THE SALE OF THE EFFECTS / OF THE LATE / W. A. THACKERAY / AT / KENSINGTON GREEN / 17th == MARCH 1864"; loop handle with foliate engraving; polished lower terminal. (b) Oak, brass, blue felt lining. Rectangular box with hinged lid and lock, lined on interior with blue felt and fitted padding to accommodate jug; an engraved brass plaque on inside of lid inscribed: "Manufactured by / APSLEY PELLATT & Co FALCON GLASS WORKS. / Purchased by MR. D'ISRAELI. and / PRESENTED TO MR. W.M. THACKERAY. / on his 35th.. birthday 18th.. July 1811."; an inset brass plaque on outside of lid, with engraved inscription: "F. WEST ESQ. / (FROM) / A.B.W / SepT.. 1891"; gilt brass bail handle on lid. (c) Iron key, open oval end; tubular barrel; C-shape tooth.
