Dante Marioni works in original ways with traditional Venetian glassblowing and decorating techniques. Using Pop art–influenced, comic-book colors paired with classical forms, he has developed several series of vessels that look contemporary while simultaneously paying homage to the history of Italian glass.
In the Italian glassblowing technique known as incalmo, which Marioni used for the Whopper Vase, a bubble of green glass was joined to a bubble of pink glass while hot on the blowpipe. This method is one of the ways to create multiple areas of solid color on a vessel or plate. A trail of yellow glass was then "wrapped" around the base of the neck and the lip of the vase.
