Glass Baseball Bat (341)
C. Dorflinger & Sons
U.S., White Mills, Pennsylvania
Lead glass, blown and cut
L: 72.2 cm
This piece was presented as a gift to John Edward (Honest Eddie) Murphy of the Philadelphia Athletics, winners of the 1913 World Series. Murphy had played on several baseball teams in the White Mills area before he joined the Philadelphia club.
The Dorflingers were proud of their hometown hero, and they decided to give him a cut glass bat. They had hoped to make a formal presentation after the first game of the World Series, which was played before more than 36,000 fans in New York City, but Murphy eventually received the glass bat in Philadelphia.
Lent by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Murphy.
