In their attempts to make gold, alchemists became engaged in the material sciences, supplying crucial knowledge for the making of astonishingly beautiful glass. "The Science of Glassmaking: Eight Centuries of a Magical Art"

Rakow Research Library

A display of original materials at the Museum’s Rakow Research Library explores glassmaking knowledge and lore from the 12th through the 19th century. The exhibit features rare books and prints that illustrate furnaces, glassmaking tools, recipes, and glass workers, as well as the objects they produced.

Carder Steuben Club Annual Symposium

47th Annual Seminar on Glass

The Museum's 47th Seminar on Glass explores glass both as a material and as a decorative art. There will be a special focus on glass and alchemy, in conjunction with the Museum's major exhibition, "Glass of the Alchemists," and on the American glass industry in honor of the 400th anniversary of glassmaking in America. Lunchtime Lecture: Elizabeth Ware Perkins

Perkins will use her Residency to more deeply pursue the idea of being an artist, archivist and narrator in her work. She will discuss her experimentation with cane, murrini and pressed glass techniques and look at their relationship to her current work, which draws heavily from her love of antique textiles. > more


"Masters of Studio Glass: František Vízner"

In 1979, The Corning Museum of Glass introduced to the American public the work of the unknown Czech artist, František Vízner. Nearly 30 years later, Vízner, now an internationally acclaimed artist, is presented in Corning as a studio glass master. This exhibition shows a range of Vízner's work in cast glass. His luminous and colorful vessel forms occupy the shifting boundary between function and non-function. Included in Museum admission. Adult admission is $12.50, kids and teens, 19 and under, free.

Are you between the ages of 14 and 19, interested in learning more about opportunities to get involved at the Museum, and thinking about ways to integrate the arts into your future? Find out more about the Museum Explainer, Junior Curator, and Youth Volunteer programs. Meet teens already involved, and talk with artists and Museum professionals. Guest speaker, artist Thérèse Lahaie, will discuss her work, in which she attempts to integrate science and movement, and her special project, a solar powered mural she created with a group of California teens. 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. The Studio Lecture Room. Meet the Artist: Thérèse Lahaie

Meet the Artist: Thérèse LahaieHear from artist, Thérèse Lahaie, who creates kinetic sculptures using glass. By giving her pieces movement, Lahaie aims to animate the glass and call attention to the unique ability of the material to capture light. Her pieces, which are colorless and assume the hues of water, are meant to be meditative and contemplative. They are works that, Lahaie says, "invite the viewer to focus on the fundamental rhythms of heartbeat and breath, expansion and contraction, which shape and sustain our lives," Admission is free, but registration is required. > more


Super Scout Saturday

The Museum will be bustling with hands-on activities for scouts and their friends. Arts and crafts, hands-on experiments, and special gallery sheets help scouts earn badges. Make corn husk dolls, beading activities, mosaics and more! A $5.00 pass (adults and scouts) is required to do the hands-on activities. Adults must pay Museum admission. Evening for Educators

This free networking event has become a favorite with local educators. In November we’ll focus on opportunities for interactive learning experiences for science students. Museum Explainers, young adults who work in the galleries, will demonstrate principles of science and glass through hands-on learning. A representative from the Science & Discovery Center will discuss how educators can take advantage of this local resource. Registration is requested. > more


2300°: Ornament-a-Palooza
November 20

At 2300°, glass gets interesting, and so do things at The Corning Museum of Glass. Kick off the holiday season with a festival of ornament making. Watch flameworkers create delicate ornaments at torches throughout the Museum, and see glass artist Christian Thirion at work on the Hot Glass Show stage. Live music and great food and beverage round out an evening of celebration. Admission is free. "Masters of Studio Glass: Richard Craig Meitner"

The intellectual, poetic, and always changing work of the American artist Richard Craig Meitner (b. 1949) reflects a variety of influences and ideas, from Japanese textiles and Italian painting and applied arts to science and the natural world. The colorless glass surfaces of his quixotic objects often incorporate assorted materials such as rust, enamel, bronze, tile, paint, and print. Meitner revels in unusual juxtapositions of forms and ideas, in unanswered questions, and in the intersections between art and science. > more


"Voices of Contemporary Glass: The Heineman Collection"

Contemporary Glass Gallery and Changing Exhibitions Gallery

Voices of Contemporary Glass showcases the 230 objects, by 87 international artists, that constitute the Museum’s recently acquired Heineman Collection. The exhibition will present the collection in the historical context of international studio glass, and focus on the accomplishments and “voices” of individual artists. Artists in the collection include Howard Ben Tré, Dale Chihuly, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, Harvey Littleton, Klaus Moje, and Toots Zynsky.
