Stephanie Sersich has been making her own glass beads, which are the focal point of her jewelry designs, for more than 15 years. For inspiration, she draws on varied sources, including textiles,...
This course will focus on making many different kinds of jewelry components—pendants, buttons, focal, and accent beads—using traditional and nontraditional flameworking techniques. A few flameworking basics will be covered, including dots, clear-casing, complex canes, and murrini. Students will then move quickly into exploring off-mandrel techniques to make pendants and buttons. Sersich uses a variety of shapes to create the matrix (core bead) of her pendants, and she’ll emphasize creating beads that aren’t round. Students will learn formulas to make beads that are rich with texture and color. They will also learn how to produce smaller accent beads, in matching sets, to be used in earrings and bracelets. An array of decorative techniques will be covered. Basic flameworking skills are required.
