This course compresses a year’s worth of education into a week of demonstration, discussion, and hands-on mold making. Students will learn the many processes necessary to complete a lost wax casting. They will start with clay modeling; move through flexible mold making, wax pouring, investment casting, and firing theory; and end with a form needing very little cold working. Students will make proficient looking objects: a box with fitted lid, chalice and bowl form, figurine, and bas relief open mold casting. Each assignment starts with a virtual tour through an art historical period or movement, broadening the students’ conceptual scope of visual possibility and supporting the development of idea through form. This class provides an overview of the staging of a variety of forms in preparation for lost-wax casting. Each student will complete a casting in the form of their choice. No glassworking experience is required.
