This course will provide a foundation for casting and fusing recycled and new float glass—more commonly known as window glass. Students will cut thick and thin disks, identify the tin side, safely explode tempered glass, conduct compatibility tests, control devitrification, apply surface and internal coloration, renew scratched surfaces, review glass chemistry, and develop appropriate firing schedules. A variety of processes will be used to make finished pieces, including fusing, slumping, reverse relief sand casting, and refractory plaster mold casting. Float glass is a versatile, readily available medium, and often free. No glassworking experience is required.
