Classes

Date:
July 10 - 15, 2017
Season:
Summer
Technique:
Glassblowing
Level:
Intermediate
Duration:
One-Week Session

This course will introduce the cup making process and use it as a means to seek understanding of what the term ‘craftsmanship’ really encompasses and where the value of ‘skill’ truly resides. Through an unlikely intersection between blown glass and performative activity, the language of technique and the rules of ‘doing things well’ will be challenged by a provocative and equally thoughtful exploration of what ‘(un)doing things well’ could mean. Motivated by the notion of speaking in tongues, this course is twofold: of gaining glassblowing skills revolving around the cup making process we can understand in a very literal way and of developing skills that put our cups in the context of risk, deconstruction, and sculptural ambiguity. One year of glassblowing experience is required.
