Photograph taken from negative loaned to Rakow Research Library by Jane Levatino, whose grandfather was Samuel Hawkes. Photograph is of several men holding various tools used for excavation of the furnace. Carder is at center with pick on right shoulder and Hawkes is at his side with a shovel; both men are posing as if they were excavating the building. The man at Carder's other side is likely Townsend DeMolyns Hawkes, a cousin who came from Ireland to work with Samuel Hawkes and his father.
