Lectures presented at the 42nd annual Seminar on Glass
Notes:
David Whitehouse, Executive Director, The Corning Museum of Glass.
Filmed during the 42nd annual Seminar on Glass at The Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY, October 9, 2003.
In the first portion of this tape David Whitehouse reviews some of the new acquistions added to the collection of The Corning Museum of Glass in the past year. He concludes with an overview of the loans of Hedwig beakers and the Principe d'Oria goblet.
Dr. Whitehouse's lecture, "Beyond Venice", focuses on glass in and around Venice before the 15th century. He begins with Roman glass and glass found on islands near Venice from the Byzantium era. Included is the Serce Limani wreck of ca. 1085 whose cargo included broken glass to be used as cullet and possbily Levantine plant ash. He touches on sources of glass ingredients for 13th century Venice glassmaking. He suggests that Venetian glassmakers learned the techniques of enameling and gilding from the Near East, and that Venetian glassmakers also copied Near Eastern types of vessels.
