Master Class Series, Volume 3: Engraving on Glass with Jiří Harcuba
In this video, the Czech artist Jiří Harcuba demonstrates engraving with diamond, stone, and copper wheels, creating innovative portraiture on glass with the highest level of craftsmanship.
He discusses his life, his work, and his interest in philosophical and psychological studies of major figures. He also comments on some of the engraved and carved glass objects in the Museum’s collection.
Harcuba is widely regarded as a glassmaker who deserves to be called a "legend." He was born into a glassmaking family, and his admiration for the famous 19th-century Bohemian engraver Dominik Biemann led him to learn the craft. He received a classical education in glass and sculpture at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, where he was appointed director in 1990. His work is widely collected, and it may be seen in major museums worldwide, including The Corning Museum of Glass.
