Slightly waisted, cylindrical body, with tall, tapered neck and sloping, rounded shoulders; trailed angular collar below the rim; applied circular seal on the side, inscribed "R.L. / 1741"; deep kick on the base, with large circular rough pontil scar.

Gardeners, Cooks, Philosophers & Gourmets: Food Culture in the Age of the Enlightenment
The Gardiner Museum is organizing an exhibition tentatively titled Gardeners, Cooks, Philosophers & Gourmets: Food Culture in the Age of the Enlightenment that will take place in Toronto from October 10, 2019 to January 12, 2020 and one other venue in the spring of 2020. Food was as topical and fashionable in the eighteenth century as it is today. Gardeners, Cooks, Philosophers & Gourmets will explore the transformation of food culture in the age of the Enlightenment, and the art it inspired. This was a watershed moment in the history of dining and the arts of the table in Europe. The exhibition will introduce passionate gardeners who cultivated new varieties of fruits and vegetables; chefs who developed a "modern" style of French cooking and dining that changed the way people ate, from the bourgeoisie to the upper classes; and philosophers who advocated simple eating and vegetarianism, curiously anticipating some of today's food trends. Dining in the French style became the height of fashion all over Europe, leading to the subsequent dominance of French cooking until the twentieth century. Dramatic developments in the arts of the table followed, and important works of art were produced in silver and the new material of the age, porcelain. Even social elements of dining changed, as informal and intimate meals emerged as part of the quest for privacy in the second half of the eighteenth century. Meredith Chilton, Curator Emerita, Gardiner Museum, brings thirty-five years of research and scholarship on this subject to the exhibition and publication as curator. We are taking an innovative approach to the publication that will accompany Gardeners, Cooks, Philosophers & Gourmets. Instead of a catalogue, Meredith is writing a cookbook, gleaning information from the journals, letters and travel books written by men and women of the time, along with a selection of eighteenth-century ,recipes transformed for contemporary use. These will be illustrated by photographs of objects from the exhibition, enabling many of them to be seen in a different context. Both the exhibition and the related publication offer an opportunity to shed new light on a lesser-known aspect of eighteenth­century dining culture. Along with objects from the Gardiner Museum's noted collections of eighteenth-century porcelain, the exhibition will bring together important art works from private collections and major institutions in North America. These include masterworks in silver, ceramics, glass, a small selection of paintings, as well as period books and works on paper.
