Primary Description:
Colorless; minute bubbles. Blown; relief-cut. Bowl. Rim plain and slightly everted, with rounded lip; upper and middle parts of wall are straight and somewhat tapered; lower wall curves down and in, and merges with convex base; no pontil mark (but see below). Decorated in relief on wall and base. On wall: continuous frieze bordered at top and bottom by pairs of horizontal ribs. Upper ribs are 1.9 cm and 3.1 cm below lip; lower ribs are 7.9 cm and 8.6 cm below lip. Frieze contains four animals alternating with four birds, all shown in profile, facing left. Each animal has pointed snout, eye represented by countersunk dot, long and curved horn, body with raised outline, foreleg thrust forward, hind leg extended backward, and short, curly tail. Each bird has curved beak, eye represented by countersunk dot, body with raised outline, wing shaped like half-palmette, large tail, and leg pointing forward. Underside of base has two similar birds, standing and facing treelike motif with central circular element, from top of which springs vertical stem terminating in palmette, and from bottom of which descends similar stem, which divides into two scrolls. Necks and feet of animals, as well as necks, wings, feet, and tails of birds, are hatched; some outlines are notched.
