Humpen. Clear glass with minute and small bubbles and few sand impurities; free blown and enameled. Slightly oval body with thick ring-like foot and a base with high "kick-up" and concentric pontil mark; below rim one and on foot a pair of bands of white dots; brownish sepia enameled scene on body commemorates ironically the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands: a man, sitting on a pedestal with the inscription: "petra fidei", and another man, standing and holding in his right hand the hair of a flying person and in his left hand a symbol consisting of a double triangle with the device: col- lice Te-la (?), are flanking a tripod which stands on a stone with inscription: "REG HISPANI". Flying person - below a ribbon with the device: "hac utamur" - has a knife and symbol of a town in its hands. Sitting man holds a "chain" of arrows in his hands that connects the crown with earth. Further to right are two other men, holding lances, second holding at belt a female person in an old coat with a double faced head: side facing man shows a kind of snake tongue, person's left hand holds a masque in front of other face. Above a ribbon with device: "Fuge fuce". Four men are in armor and with their pointed beards and costumes recognizable as Spaniards. Flying and double faced poorly dressed persons symbolize occupied Netherlands. Below this scene is a Latin inscription in white enamel: "Ut iusto pareat Batavum".
