Primary Description:
Wine Decanter or Jug. Thick, colorless non-lead glass; free-blown, acid-engraved, enameled and gilded. Cylindrical sheared neck with tiny pinched lip, chestnut shaped body with ground and polished base; applied loop handle; elaborate acid-engraved overall relief diaper decoration, smooth flat design and mat background -- on neck and lower part of body, the chief motif, on a Chinese-like diaper, Cross of Lorraine within ring; on upper body, slender gilt- outlined white enameled scrolls, with vein of gray dots, forming four cartouche-like areas: front, gilt and enameled thistle and leaves on curlicue diaper; back, gilt and red enamel "Cross of Lorraine" on Greek key diaper; one side, a gilt and enameled coat of arms on basket-weave diaper; other side, gilt fleur de lis, at center top of stylized eagle motif on coil diaper; on handle small 5-petal flowers widely spaced on rough background; gilt in narrow bands on neck and lip. Lozenge stopper with same "Cross of Lorraine" diaper as on neck.
