Biography: Carl Siglin

Carl Siglin
Name:
Carl Siglin
Title:
Hot Glass Maintenance Team Leader

After 25 years working construction, Carl Siglin came to glassblowing as a hobby before making it a second career. He prefers single color transparent glass, creating simple forms with simple processes, but is constantly honing new techniques—such as cane work and incalmo—to include in his practice. While he recognizes the need to adjust around the properties of molten glass, Siglin tries to make sure his own direction is included. “I try to bring new ideas into the glass and constantly adjust technique to get an adjusted result,” said Siglin. His goal with glassmaking is to learn all he can while also having fun and entertaining others.

Siglin began blowing glass in 2002 shortly before starting as a technician at The Studio. Prior to his work in glass, Siglin attended Syracuse University's School of Architecture and ran his own independent contracting company for 15 years. He makes and sells his own line of production glass, and has taught beginning glassblowing classes for many years. In 2008, Siglin joined the Hot Glass Team at The Corning Museum of Glass where he traveled extensively with the Hot Glass at Sea Program.

At the Museum, Siglin enjoys being able to share his love of glass with visitors from all around the world, focusing on making work that will grab the attention of the audience. “I enjoy the personal interaction that comes with having people watch the process and then see the finished result,” said Siglin. “Glass has always been just a hobby for me, and I love that I get to share my hobby with others.”
