Kiln Working
Level:
All Levels
Duration:
One-Week Session

During this class, Emma Varga will introduce her original method of fusing and casting multiple layers of glass. This innovative technique enables the fusing or casting of thin glass sheets which are then used to set up layers composed of tiny, mosaic-like elements. Using this technique creates three-dimensional images inside the transparent fused/cast sculptural object.

This course will focus on a new way of three-dimensional thinking in creating glass objects, on using the properties of glass to achieve visual effects, and achieving sense of movement within cast glass object. Over the past three years, Varga has experimented with new techniques like glass mosaic made from pre-fused elements and sculptural objects constructed from tiny pâté de verre elements–a rather unusual and innovative application of the pâté de verre technique.

During this class, these methods and possible combinations will be demonstrated. Students are encouraged to experiment and play with kiln forming techniques in order to create a range of small fused, cast, and constructed objects. Students will also receive handouts and detailed explanations related to firing schedules.

Expect to discover an exciting new method of creating images within transparent three-dimensional glass objects.

No prior glassworking experience is necessary. Advanced students are also welcome.
