Online Course: Bubble Form & Bit Work

June 10 - July 1, 2021 7:00pm to 8:30pm
All Levels
Four-Week Session

This is a four-session online class that is focused on the examination of vessel forms, of functional scale. The series will begin by going over some of the basic bubble forms found in nearly all vessels and will progress to further embellishment with optic molding, along with basic handles, to fine bit work. Each 90-minute online session will follow a discussion, demonstration, and debrief format. Working systems presented are drawn from the instructor’s nearly 30 years of varied experience at the furnace, touching on adaptations from the Venetian tradition along with the latest adjustments for working safely and effectively during the pandemic.

Class discussion will help to drive the focus of the demonstration, so students should come prepared with ideas, images, and questions. The debrief at the end of each session will focus on technical questions and be a time to highlight lessons and takeaways for personal practice.

Some glassblowing experience is recommended. As this is an online class, participants are best served if they have access to a hot shop and dedicated time to practice between classes. This is important as it enables students to apply the skills being introduced. Alternatively, students without these facilities can gather knowledge to apply at a later time.

The class will be delivered via weekly video conferences that incorporate presentations, live demonstrations, and class discussions. Classes take place Thursdays, 7–8:30 pm EST, beginning June 10, 2021. Students registered for this course should have a reliable internet connection during class hours and a computer or tablet that can support video and audio communication. All students will have an online orientation with Studio staff prior to June 10 to ensure connectivity. If this class is full, we encourage you to email your name and phone number to [email protected] to be added to the waiting list.
