Online Course: Exploring Borosilicate Flameworking

Classes

Date:
March 3 - May 5, 2021 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Season:
Spring
Technique:
Flameworking
Level:
Intermediate
Duration:
Ten-Week Session

This 10-week online class is designed as a survey of flameworking borosilicate glass.  Students will engage in a progressive and educational journey which deepens their understanding of borosilicate glass and a wide variety of techniques to manipulate this material.

Each week, new techniques will be introduced through lectures and demonstrations which will allow students to develop a strong foundation of theoretical and technical mastery. Students will have the opportunity to share the work they have created each week in a group discussion environment where questions can be asked, processes can be explored, and technical information can be shared. Additional reading lists will be provided for self-guided research. Students will investigate the techniques of pendant-making, Latticino (cane work), small ornament construction, air traps, cocooning, fuming precious metals, bridging, three-dimensional sculpture, and simple functional hollow-worked forms.

As this is an online class, participants must have access to a flameworking studio and dedicated time to practice between classes. This is important to enable students to apply the skills being introduced. One year of flameworking experience is required, advanced students are also welcome.

The class will be delivered via weekly video conferences that incorporate presentations, live demonstrations, and class discussions. Classes take place Wednesdays, 7–8:30 PM EST, beginning March 3, 2021. Students registered for this course should have a reliable internet connection during class hours and a computer or tablet that can support video and audio communication. All students will have an online orientation with Studio staff prior to March 4 to ensure connectivity. If this class is full, we encourage you to email your name and phone number to [email protected] to be added to the waiting list.
