Pyrex and Material Culture is the focus of the 54th annual Seminar at the Corning Museum of Glass, to be held on October 16 and 17, 2015. The theme complements the Museum’s exhibit America’s Favorite Dish: Celebrating a Century of Pyrex. The exhibit themes: personal connections to Pyrex, advertising and its role in the popularization of Pyrex, designing for the mid-century home, and women and the professionalization of home economics, all offer lenses that contribute to understanding Pyrex and material culture.

Speakers in the Pyrex and Material Culture Seminar include:

  • Keynote Speaker Professor Regina Lee Blaszczyk: Leadership Chair in the History of Business and Society at the University of Leeds, UK and Author, Imagining Consumers: Design and Innovation from Wedgwood to Corning
  • J. Ritchie Garrison: Director of the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and Department Chair, Material Culture, University of Delaware
  • Katherine Parkin: Associate Professor of History, Monmouth University and Author, Food Is Love: Food Advertising and Gender Roles in Modern America
  • Betsy Cromley: Emeritus Professor, School of Architecture, Northeastern University and Author, The Food Axis: Cooking, Eating, and the Architecture of American Houses

This year’s Seminar will also include a panel discussing the design of Pyrex, led by Rob Cassetti, Senior Director of Creative Services and Marketing at The Corning Museum of Glass, a collectors' panel led by Tina Oldknow, Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Glass, as well as a Pyrex Dealer Fair showcasing public collections of Pyrex.
