Mark Matthews BTG Lecture

Join Mark Matthews as he presents Origins, Inspirations, and Unprecedented Extrapolations: Confessions of a Glass Sphere Maker. Described by Matthews as a ‘comprehensive jaunt through my odyssey,’ he will trace his development as a glass sphere artist using stories, observations and a rich, photographic timeline. Matthews’ choice of the sphere as the preferred vehicle for his artistic expression, his development of ‘radically modern tools and techniques’ for achievement of his aesthetic, and his study and application of sophisticated color theories are trademarks of his work. He has studied historical glassmaking techniques and objects for inspiration, and the designs he explores range from antique German marble-inspired swirls and lutzes to the complex, and wholly natural patterns of animal pelts. Matthew’s works have been broadly exhibited and published, and his spheres are in the collections of The Corning Museum of Glass; the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; the Toledo Museum of Art; and the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Behind the Glass lectures are free and open to the public.
