Dr. Karlyn Sutherland, 2017 Rakow Commission artist

Dr. Karlyn Sutherland, a Scottish emerging artist, is the recipient of the 2017 Rakow Commission. This honor is bestowed annually on an artist who explores innovative ideas, and whose work is not yet represented in the Museum's Collection.

Sutherland creates evocative fused wall pieces, and site-specific installations that explore the emotional power of place. Her work — including her commission — focuses on her sense of attachment to familiar locales, like her childhood home.

Join Sutherland as she speaks about her body of work and unveils her Rakow Commission piece to the public for the first time. Her presentation will be followed by a dessert reception, beginning at 7:45. Both are free and open to the public. Watch Behind the Glass lectures on our YouTube Channel.

Museum Members at the Donor level and above ($135+) are invited to come early for a private reception at 5:30 pm. Please RSVP to +1 (607) 438-5600 or membership@cmog.org by November 6.

Karlyn Sutherland

Dr. Karlyn Sutherland is inspired by the bond between people and place. Autobiographical in nature, her work explores this dialogue through glass and architecture, with a particular focus on how characteristics and qualities of space are capable of shaping our experience, memories, and sense of attachment to our surroundings.
