Emile Gallé’s vase, Les Hommes noirs (The dark men) was inspired by the Dreyfus Affair, a political and social scandal involving a French Jewish military officer, Alfred Dreyfus, who suffered a wrongful conviction for treason. The resulting cover-up divided French society for years. Robert Harris’ novel, An Officer and a Spy, delves into this story.

Bring your lunch to the Education Lab at the Museum December 11th to discuss the book. Following the discussion, Curatorial Assistant Linnea Seidling will take attendees to view Gallé’s vase in the gallery and she will talk about its design and history.

Copies of the book are available from online vendors, such as Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble, or you can borrow a copy from the Southeast Steuben Public Library.
