This film documents the fabrication of the 8.3 meter ULE mirror blank for the Subaru telescope by Corning Incorporated at their Canton, NY factory. Subaru is an interior optical-infrared telescope located at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), National Institutes of Natural Science. The video begins with coverage of the making of the 200" blank by Corning in 1934 with the use of old photos and film footage, and then proceeds to the manufacture of the mirror for the Subaru telescope in Hawaii. Included is information on the type of glass used, the actual production process, grinding, flipping, and shipment of the Subaru mirror to Pittsburgh for polishing. Many of Corning Incorporated's employees working on this project are interviewed.
