Variant Title:
Death is swallowed up in victory
Notes:
Design illustrates death of Monica in Ostia with detailed text about Monica's son, St. Augustine, and Augustine's conversion to Christianity as well as other details on either side of design. Middle four panes may be of St. Augustine's baptism. Monica was the wife of Patricius, a pagan Roman official in Tagaste, Africa; she finally converted Patricius to Christianity shortly before his death.

Frederick Wilson, who trained as a stained glass artist in England, began working for Tiffany in 1893 as head of design; he is noted for his knowledge of Christian iconography.
"Frederick Wilson, '96" -- penciled in lower right corner of lower right pane.
"1896" -- written in black ink on lower right corner.
Watercolor was folded three times, dividing paper into six parts; in the upper left section, the vertical crease was trimmed, creating an elongated lacuna.
