Part of a group of letters written 1877-1880 between John Northwood I and Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, during which time Northwood polished the pottery editions of the Portland Vase.
Memo states Josiah Wedgwood & Sons had received a complaint regarding pottery copies of Portland Vase: "the polishing and cutting was generally fair but in several parts the undercutting and edge cutting was any thing [sic.] but perfect & the hand of the reclining female figure on the right hand side of the serpent was not right... I don't think Mr. Northwood is doing his best with these".
