"The album is the first presentation of folk icons on glass popular in the 19th-the first third of the 20th centuries in western Ukraine. The works were made with the help of a special technique on the reverse side of glass and were meant for rural houses. Historical circumstances were of little favour to their preservation. A huge amount of icons was destroyed, and the majority of those presented here were saved for future generations by private collectors. This edition presents works of vernacular masters from Bukovyna, Pokuttya and Hutsulshchyna. They are from museums and private collections of Ukraine and Poland, the bulk of them being reproduced for the first time"--T.p. verso.
