Dwight Lanmon provides a brief introduction to David McFadden's lecture. McFadden traces the role of design, and the appearance of individualism, and the place of the artist/designer in the glass industry, beginning with Gallé and the 1889 exhibition and ending with New Glass, in 1979 at Corning. He mentions artists connected with the Wiener Werkstätte, those of Scandinavia and France, and the importance of the Triennale of Milan. Glass design progresses to the role it plays today, with glass as a work of art, and often non-functional.
