In 1878, Baccarat displayed a monumental piece, "Le temple de Mercure" (The Temple of Mercury) at the World's Fair in Paris. This monument includes a reproduction bronze statue in the center called "Flying Mercury." The monument consists of 2,000 pieces of crystal. and won a Grand Prix at the Fair. In 1892, Louis I of Portugal acquired the temple and had it moved to his gardens. After his death, a wealthy Spanish family purchased the temple and had it moved to their gardens in Barcelona. During its reassembly and weathering over the years, the temple had suffered and was in need of repairs. In 2011, Baccarat restored the Temple of Mercury.
