Seeing Glass and Color

Glass can be made in a wide variety of colors. We see this in the ways light and glass interact with one another. The different interactions between glass and light demonstrated in this animation are what lead us to see glass the way we do.

Transmit, Absorb, Reflect

Why is glass clear? When all colors pass through glass, so that the glass TRANSMITS all colors, we see the glass as clear and colorless.

When one color mostly passes through glass, and glass ABSORBS the other colors, we can see through the glass and see the glass as having that one color.

When one color mostly REFLECTS off a glass surface while other colors are absorbed, we cannot see through the glass, and see the glass as that one color.
